The working mechanism of a French press is quite simple. All you need is some ground coffee and pre-heated water. Add both ground coffee and water into this gadget and press; it will extract all the flavors and create delicious coffee each time.

Is it worth buying a French press?

Although the French press basically manual produces a great refreshing coffee compared to a standard drip machine. It’s great for those who love home handmade coffee.

However, if you have a limited budget and love classy kitchenware, a French press is a perfect pick for you. This gadget provides a full-bodied brew and a richly aromatic coffee without costing a lot.

What’s the right French Press ratio?

Coffee to water ratio according to the ‘’rule of thumb’’ – Use 1:15 ratio of coffee to water. For every one gram of coffee you need 15 grams of water, which is about 3 tablespoons of coffee for 1 cup of water.  This will be on the weaker side, so you can always add a little more coffee if you find it to weak.

How much coffee will my French Press make?

The cup sizes are based on smaller European cups (4 ounces), not on the popular American mug-sized coffees 8 to 10 ounces. The following guidelines have proven helpful over time:

  • How much coffee for 3 cup press – 1 cup
  • How much coffee for 8 cup press – 3.4 cups
  • How much coffee for 12 cup press – 5.3 cups

What’s the right grind size for a French Press coffee machine?

The basic rule of thumb with a coffee press is; the finer the grounds, the stronger the brew. The coarser the grounds, the weaker the brew. However, you will definitely want to avoid going too far in either directions. If it’s too coarse you’re going to get some weak coffee. Too fine and it will become very bitter leading to over-extraction.

The secret is all in the grind: choose medium, with uniformity and consistency throughout.  Very coarse grinds may clog the filter, while very fine grinds will pass through the filter, muddying the results.

How long do you wait before pushing down French press?

The best practise is to set a 4 minutes timer, but you can adjust this to suit your preferences. If you like stronge stuff, give it more time.

What’s the best coffee for a French Press?

How to use a French Press?

We’ll walk you through the basic method, to brew your coffee in 5 minutes or less.

1. Preheat your French Press

Preheat the brewer equipment by adding hot water, and swilling it, while you grind your coffee. Pour out the hot water after 30 seconds.

After adding your coffee grounds, pour half of the total hot water in a circular motion over the grounds, ensure that all the grounds are submerged. Let it bloom for 30 seconds, then add the remaining water.

4. Put the lid on and start timing

Put on the lid and slowly lower the plunger until it touches the surface of the water.  Set your timer, and then play the waiting game! The standard coffee press steep time is 4 minutes, but you can adjust this to suit your preferences.

5. Filter and Decant the coffee

Bring the plunger down slowly, make sure you press it down all the way to the bottom. You are almost there, but you need to decant your coffee or  it will continue to brew into over-extraction.
